Yesterday at 1:00 p.m., an old naval mine was detonated under controlled conditions in front of Lošinj. The mine was found at the entrance to the port of Čikat on the island of Lošinj. The mine was towed to the open sea yesterday. All inhabitants of the island were informed about the event. Navigation was prohibited in the area where the mine was detonated. The ban was in effect until 10:00 p.m. yesterday evening.
According to the portal otoci.net, a mine from the Second World War was found in the Lošinj water area at the beginning of the month. The exact location, where it is located, was not announced until the day before yesterday's press conference. The mine was German-made and contained 690 kg of explosives, which is equivalent to 1200 kg of TNT. It was supposed to have been erected in 1945, before the end of the war. It had several lighters that were pressure sensitive. Therefore, the mine was detonated under the water surface. It was lowered to a depth of 28 m at a location 4.5 nmi west of the island of Lošinj. The detonation caused a 150 m high water column.
