About
The Pelješac Bridge is one of the most important infrastructure projects in the history of Croatia, as it enabled for the first time a direct road connection between southern Dalmatia and the rest of the country without passing through Bosnia and Herzegovina. The idea of the bridge emerged already in the 1990s, when residents of southern Dalmatia pointed out the difficulties caused by the Bosnian territory at Neum, which interrupted the road link. The project was postponed several times due to political and financial reasons, but was finally realized within the EU‑co‑funded project Road Connectivity with Southern Dalmatia.
Construction began on April 23, 2018 and lasted until January 27, 2022. The central part of the bridge was built using the free cantilever method, while the approach bridges were constructed by incremental launching. The ceremonial opening took place on July 26, 2022, and the event was marked as the largest celebration in the history of independent Croatia.
The bridge is of strategic importance, as Croatia for the first time in history became a territorially connected whole without interruption at Neum. It provides faster and safer travel between Split and Dubrovnik, which is crucial for tourism, the economy, and the everyday lives of residents. The Pelješac Bridge has become a symbol of national unity and technological progress in Croatia. Crossing the bridge is toll‑free, which increases its accessibility for locals and tourists.
The bridge is one of the largest in Europe and the biggest construction project in the history of Croatia. Its construction was extremely demanding due to deep marine foundations and strong wind conditions in the Bay of Mali Ston. Today, the Pelješac Bridge is not only a transport link but also a symbol of connection, technological advancement, and European solidarity. Its image has become a new icon of the Adriatic coast.
