About
Ston is a small but historically extremely important town at the beginning of the Pelješac peninsula. Its location between the sea, salt pans and hills attracted the first settlers in ancient times, and later the Romans developed salt production, which became the foundation of the wealth of the Dubrovnik Republic. It was precisely because of the salt pans that the republic built the mighty Ston walls in the 14th century, one of the longest in Europe, which still picturesquely connect Ston with Mali Ston today. The salt pans remain a living monument to tradition, where salt is still extracted by hand, according to ancient procedures.
The town is also known for the special features that set it apart from other Dalmatian towns. Ston's oysters are considered some of the best in the world, and the walls are so powerful that locals often call them the European Great Wall of China. Ston is also home to the oldest operating salt pan in Europe, where salt has been produced for over four thousand years. Today, Ston combines a peaceful Mediterranean atmosphere, rich heritage and superb cuisine, making it an ideal place for visitors seeking an authentic historical experience and a taste of the Adriatic.
